Worthington, Ohio
Equity between the two high schools was a high priority as Worthington completely renovates Kilbourne and constructs a new facility for Thomas Worthington.
Mike created a Program of Requirements (POR) for each building and led the CDA team during programming and design of all spaces. The entire CDA design team conducted extensive meetings with each group of staff and end users at each school and created templates of spaces for discussion, keeping equity between schools in mind. Mike presented at numerous community and School Board meetings to convey preliminary design schemes and budgets for the projects. He continues to be a primary liaison between the design team and the District while the projects are under construction, with regular updates and presentations to the School Board.
At KHS, the team moved the Media Center from its existing location to a more accessible and centrally located position, also incorporating views of nature, making it the heart of the school and student hub. A balance of stacks, technology, study tables, comfortable lounge seating, small group areas, lines of sight for supervision and flexibility are all features of the Media Center.
The multi-million-dollar new furniture package was specified and coordinated with the reuse of some existing furniture in mind, to create a cohesive look for both buildings. The CDA interiors team developed a unified color scheme and aesthetic keeping existing KHS elements in mind and emphasizing school spirit.
